Relax all day … then party the Mexico way all night

Cancun BeachA holiday in Cancun guarantees powdery white sand beaches, and warm crystal-clear waters lapping at the sun kissed Caribbean shore. And after dark the city comes alive.

Cancun, once a small fishing village, has developed into one of Mexico’s most popular resorts offering both a relaxing beach holiday a lively and wild Mexican experience. The downtown area of Cancun is where local residents live and work, and holiday-makers tend to stick to the more developed area, an L-shaped strip of land with glitzy hotels, air-conditioned shopping malls, chic restaurant dining and notoriously energetic night life.

The coastline, with spectacular coral reefs and many miles of beaches, offers a variety of activities, from diving, snorkelling and deep sea fishing to volleyball or just lounging in a hammock – people watching! Away from the beach, you can visit local Mayan ruins or an alligator farm, play golf on a championship golf course, or hire a bike and go cycling.

Mexican cuisine is traditionally spicy, and you can sample tacos from street stalls for a quick snack, go to a seafood restaurant, or try local Yucatan dishes such as cochinita pibil (suckling pig in banana leaves). Cancun also offers fast food and international restaurants, but for the true taste of Mexico go to one of the cantinas around Cancun’s downtown bullring. Here the food is always good, and the atmosphere particularly lively on Wednesday afternoons after the weekly bullfight.

Cancun comes alive at night, with a flamboyant mixture of nightclubs, discos and bars opening their doors at about 10pm for a party that lasts till sunrise. Be prepared to dance the night away, whether your preference is for salsa or rock and funk. Most clubs and pubs run promotional or theme evenings, with free drinks for women on ladies nights. Those seeking more cultural entertainment should not miss the internationally renowned Ballet Folklorico, featuring lavish costumes and traditional dances.
